Keybinding is a great way to quickly and effectively use your character's abilities with little effort. If using a healer or another character that needs to focus on giving bufs to a teammate, keybinding can mean the difference between dying and staying alive.
Thanks to the efforts of Tranceaddict on the STO forums, you can make your own keybinds with little effort.
The following is the basic keybind creation; for the full tutorial please visit forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=192243
**STEP ONE**
Create Bindfile - type into your chat window:
/bind_save_file keybindground.txt
Where it says keybindground, you can replace with whatever you wish.
YOU MUST DO THIS FROM WHERE YOU ARE. So if you want to create a space keybind file you must type that while your character is in space. Ditto ground.
This creates a notepad file in the STO folder of your hardrive; most users can find it at
C:\Users\<user>\Games\Cryptic Studios\Star Trek Online\Live
**STEP TWO**
Edit Bindfile - open up that notepad and edit in your keybinds. And don't worry if you screw up; if you do just go back into your in-game menu and restore to defaults.
A few quick notes.
(1) Must do seperate files for ground and space.
(2) Although your ability tray follows the 1-0 convention, the keyhinds follow the 0-9 convention. So if you want to bind the abiltiy you have in the bottom row, key 1 of your ability tray, its actually row 0, column 0.
(3) Use the $$ keys to seperate the different commands
(4) Nothing can be down about it as it was done like this on purpose to prevent bots, but you must hit keys 'x' many times to make it work. So in below example you must hit the '1' key four times in rapid succession to get the full effect of the keybind.
(5) Also, I had already used the in-game 'basic' key binding system so when I hit 1-4 above my WASD keys, it would select my teammates. So because of that my 'original' key bind file showed the following... you might have to just add in the below if you want to follow the same exact binds
1 "TargetTeammate 1"
2 "TargetTeammate 2"
3 "TargetTeammate 3"
4 "TargetTeammate 4"
5 "Target_Self"
After adding in my heals abilities; my key bind file showed the following:
1 "TargetTeammate 1 $$ +TrayExecByTray 1 0 $$ +TrayExecByTray 1 1 $$ +TrayExecByTray 1 2"
2 "TargetTeammate 2 $$ +TrayExecByTray 1 0 $$ +TrayExecByTray 1 1 $$ +TrayExecByTray 1 2"
3 "TargetTeammate 3 $$ +TrayExecByTray 1 0 $$ +TrayExecByTray 1 1 $$ +TrayExecByTray 1 2"
4 "TargetTeammate 4 $$ +TrayExecByTray 1 0 $$ +TrayExecByTray 1 1 $$ +TrayExecByTray 1 2"
5 "Target_Self $$ +TrayExecByTray 1 0 $$ +TrayExecByTray 1 1 $$ +TrayExecByTray 1 2"
Again, remember that the keybinds follow the 0-9 convention. So when hitting the '1' key I targeted teammate one, and executed my abilities from the second row of my personal tray (row 1) and the first three abilities from left to right (columns 0-2).
**STEP THREE**
Save Bindfile - Save the bindfile by clicking 'save' in your notepad's file menu.
Then load bindfile by going back into the game and typing into the chat window:
/bind_load_file keybindground.txt
(or whatever you called it in leiu of keybindground)
And voila keybinds!
NOTE: You cant 'test' space abilities in sector space, only in orbit of a planet or space station (or in combat)
